ADULT FICTION LARGEST BOOK SELLING CATEGORY.
New York, New York. September 8, 2010. According to RR Bowker’s recently released “2009 Book Consumer Annual Review: U.S. Demographics & Buying Behaviors”, Adult fictions was the largest of the major categories of books sold in 2009. This category was 40% of books sold and 28% of the dollar volume. The lower dollar volume is a result of many books in this category being sold as low priced mass market paperbacks. On the other end of the spectrum are academic and profession books, which account for a small number of books sold yet a large dollar amount of the total market. Young adult and general fiction each generated 8% of the total unit sales. Romance and thriller/espionage each had 6% of the market. Religious books and Bibles account for 8% of units sold and 9% of the dollars.
